How to Enable or Disable Secure Boot on ASUS PC Motherboard

Are you looking to enable or disable Secure Boot on your ASUS motherboard? In this article, we will guide you through the process step by step. Generally, Secure Boot is enabled by default on ASUS motherboards with UEFI BIOS. However, if you want to have a dual-boot setup or install Windows easily, you may need to disable Secure Boot. Rest assured, disabling or enabling Secure Boot will not void your warranty. Let’s get started!

Before You Start

Before you disable Secure Boot on your ASUS motherboard, make sure that your computer is in UEFI mode with GPT partitions. Otherwise, you may face difficulties installing Windows or configuring dual boot. Here are two methods to enable GPT partitions:

Method 1: Command Prompt

If you prefer using Command Prompt, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the Windows installation disc or a USB flash drive and boot your computer in UEFI mode.
  2. When the setup opens, press Shift + F10 to access the command prompt console.
  3. Use the “diskpart” command to access the disk partition tool. Allow it to make changes to your computer.
  4. Use the “list disk” command to identify and list the disk format.
  5. Select the drive you want to format and convert it to GPT with the following commands: “select disk”, “clean” (this command erases the disk), “convert gpt” (this one converts it to GPT).

Method 2: Third-Party Application

If you’re not comfortable with the command prompt, you can use Partition Master by EaseUS to convert your hard drive to GPT. This application also offers additional features like deleting, wiping, merging, and creating hard drive partitions.

EaseUS Partition Master

Partition Master by EaseUS is available in three versions: Partition Master Pro (for one computer), Partition Master Server (for servers), and Partition Master Unlimited (for multiple computers and servers). You can find all three options on the official EaseUS website, and they come with free trials.

Disabling Secure Boot

Once you’ve completed the necessary preparations, follow these steps to disable Secure Boot on your ASUS PC motherboard:

  1. Connect a USB stick to your computer.
  2. Open the Start menu and choose to restart your computer.
  3. While the computer is booting up, press the DEL button (or a different key depending on your model) to enter the BIOS.
  4. Open the advanced mode, typically by pressing the F7 key.
  5. Navigate to the Boot section and then to the Secure Boot submenu.
  6. In the Operating System Type section, select “Windows UEFI Mode” from the drop-down menu.
  7. Open the Key Management submenu.
  8. Choose the “Save secure startup keys” option.
  9. Press Enter.
  10. When prompted to choose a file system, select the USB drive you connected earlier.
  11. The BIOS will store the DBX, DB, KEK, and PK key files on the USB drive.
  12. Delete the platform key to disable Secure Boot. Make sure not to delete any other keys.
  13. Press F10 to save your settings and exit the BIOS. Your computer will restart, and Secure Boot will be disabled.

Enabling Secure Boot

If you change your mind and want to re-enable Secure Boot, follow these steps:

  1. Insert a USB stick into your PC.
  2. Click on the Start button and select Restart from the Power menu.
  3. While your computer is restarting, press DELETE (or another designated key) to access the BIOS.
  4. Press F7 (or a different designated key) to enter the Advanced Mode section of the BIOS menu.
  5. Navigate to the Boot section and then to the Secure Boot section.
  6. Choose “Windows UEFI Mode” from the drop-down menu in the Operating System Type option.
  7. Go to key management.
  8. Scroll to the “Load Default PK” option and press Enter.
  9. If you select “Yes,” the default key ring will be loaded. If you choose “No,” you can load the keys you have saved.
  10. If you chose “No,” select the USB drive with the saved keys from the “Select File System” list.
  11. Select the PK key and click OK.
  12. In the “Select Key File Type,” choose “UEFI Secure Variable” and press OK.
  13. When prompted to update “PK” from the selected file “PK,” choose “Yes.”
  14. Save your settings and exit the BIOS. Your computer will restart in Secure Boot mode.
