What is a Serial Number

A serial number is a unique number used for identification and inventory. It is sometimes written as Serial No., SN, S/N, or SNID. A serial number lets a company identify a product and find out more about it to replace it or find parts that work with it. On the back or side of a computer, a serial number might look like the one in the picture.

Even though it’s called a “serial number,” it usually has both letters and numbers. The number of characters in a serial number depends a lot on the manufacturer, the product, and the model. Most serial numbers have at least six or seven characters, and some have twenty or more.

Serial numbers are used to identify a specific item, just like a fingerprint is used to identify a specific person. The purpose of a serial number is to give a unique number to one device at a time, instead of a name or number that can be used for many different things.
